Early voting for Georgia's June 16 primary runoffs begins June 8 and runs through June 12 at the City Services Center in Columbus. The schedule covers local races and the Republican gubernatorial runoff between Lt. Gov. Burt Jones and healthcare executive Rick Jackson. The winner will face Democratic nominee Keisha Lance Bottoms in November.

Local Races Anchor Columbus Ballot

Columbus voters will decide the mayor's race between Joanne Cogle and Isaiah Hugley. Two city commission seats in Districts 7 and 9 also appear on the ballot. These contests run alongside the statewide Republican primary runoff for governor.

Muscogee County officials prepared the same number of voting machines used in the May primary. Director of Elections Nancy Boren said the county expects heavy turnout despite the runoff format. The decision to maintain full equipment levels stands out for a runoff election.

Runoff Narrows GOP Field for Governor

The Republican primary runoff features only Burt Jones and Rick Jackson. The May 19 primary eliminated the other top candidates, including Attorney General Chris Carr and Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger. Jones holds the lieutenant governor post and carries multiple Trump endorsements. Jackson entered late as a self-funded healthcare executive.

The runoff winner secures the GOP nomination against Keisha Lance Bottoms in the general election. Georgia law requires a June 16 runoff when no candidate reaches 50 percent in the primary. Eight candidates appeared on the initial GOP ballot.

Party Rules Restrict Runoff Voters

Voters must select the ballot of the party they chose during the May primary. Democrats receive the Democratic runoff ballot. Republicans receive the Republican ballot. Nonpartisan voters may choose either.

Boren confirmed the restriction follows standard Georgia runoff procedures. The rule prevents crossover voting that sometimes occurs in general elections. Officials expect most participants to stick with their primary party choice.

Access Measures Target Turnout

Free taxi rides to the polls are available through Radio Co-op and For Heaven’s Sake Taxi Services. Voters can call 706-322-0700 to arrange rides during early voting and on election day. The service covers the full period from June 8 through June 16.

Early voting occurs only at the City Services Center. No other sites operate during the runoff window. Officials promoted the taxi program to offset the single-location constraint and encourage participation.
