Keisha Lance Bottoms captured the Democratic nomination for governor with more than 57 percent of the vote on May 19. The outright victory eliminated any need for a runoff and underscored a surge in Democratic participation that powered multiple Black women candidates to wins down the ballot.
Democratic Results Show Unity and Breadth
Bottoms consolidated support across the party in a field that lacked a dominant alternative. Her performance aligned with broader turnout gains that delivered victories for Tanya Miller in the attorney general race and Penny Brown Reynolds for secretary of state.
Those outcomes fit a pattern of strong performance by Black women candidates on the Democratic side. The results position the party with a clear standard-bearer for the general election against whatever Republican emerges from the June 16 runoff.
Republican Governor Primary Splits the Field
No Republican reached a majority in the gubernatorial primary, sending Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones and billionaire healthcare executive Rick Jackson into the June 16 runoff. Jones carries multiple endorsements from former President Trump, while Jackson poured tens of millions of his own money into television advertising as a late entrant.
The outcome left Attorney General Chris Carr, the top external fundraiser, and Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, who self-funded millions after his 2022 reelection, outside the final two. The split reflects ongoing divisions within the party between establishment figures and Trump-aligned challengers.
